Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity

What is a Funeral?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Theology on Tap is tonight (October 1, 2026), and we’ll focus on funerals.

In a book I read recently, a funeral mortician said, “We die. We’re embalmed. We’re waked. The community comes together for a service, then we’re burned or buried. This is the American funeral.”

For most people, this is really how they view a funeral, at least in the past. But today, not only have people’s views of funerals been changing, but whether they have one at all is changing.

The conversation tonight is a chance to discuss why it’s important for the Christian to have a funeral and what it should confess to those who gather. In other words, why are funerals important?

I hope you will consider joining us, bringing a beverage or snack for yourself or to share, and join in the conversation.

In our risen Savior, Jesus Christ,
Pastor Rogness
