Hymn of the Year

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the coming year, we are going to try having a hymn of the year. Our Hymn of the Year is “Built on the Rock the Church Shall Stand,” a beloved hymn whose tune stays with us.

Why are we having a hymn of the year? A Hymn of the Year is meant to unite us as we sing, pray, and take its words to heart—especially when the ground beneath us always seems to shift like sand.

“Built on the Rock” points us to St. Peter’s great confession: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (St. Matthew 16)

Jesus Christ is our cornerstone. We are living stones, built upon Him, and our firm foundation is given to us in Holy Baptism and sustained at the altar in His Holy Supper.

And as the hymn reminds us, our Lord knows His own. He knows you. He gives His people peace as we wait for the day when He brings us into His eternal presence.

As we sing this hymn throughout the coming year, get to know the words more deeply and reflect on how it unites us as living stones and Christians to one another. Rejoice that the words of this hymn continue to remind you and point you to your rock, your foundation, and the cornerstone of your faith, Jesus Christ.
