Third Sunday in Advent (Gaudete)
To Do Good and Distribute
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Years ago, I was given the tradition of reciting a paraphrase of Hebrews 13:16 before the offering. The text goes like this,
Through Christ, let us offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, the offering of lips confessing His name. But, do not forget to do good and
distribute, for with such sacrifices, God is well pleased.
The purpose of speaking this passage before the offering is first to remind ourselves that we do all things through Jesus Christ, and we can only do good in our prayers and the confession of our faith because of His death and the forgiveness we receive from Him.
But the second part of this passage serves as a reminder of the discipline we should practice to do good within the church and among our neighbors. It’s a call to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, including giving and supporting the church’s mission, because through these gifts, congregations such as Good Shepherd can support missions and programs here at home, as well as missions throughout the broader Church.
Starting this Sunday, I will recite the words above from the book of Hebrews each Sunday just before the offering. Let them serve as a reminder of the faith we have and confess in Jesus Christ, as well as the opportunity we have to be faithful stewards of the gifts and resources entrusted to us.
In Christ Jesus,
Pastor Rogness
