St. James the Elder, Apostle (Observed)
Hello from Convention
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Greetings from Phoenix, AZ, where it hasn’t been as hot as I expected. I'm here to attend and represent our circuit at the LCMS Synod Convention. The purpose of the synod convention is to handle the business of the synod.
So, what does the synod's work look like?
About 900 delegates from across the country and around the world vote to elect new officers, amend the bylaws of the synod, create new programs to address loss, and direct the synod to study and clarify various issues faced in the Church and culture. The days are long, and the hours of sitting wear on the body; there are many votes and a lot of discussion. While the delegates do not always agree on resolutions, it’s inspiring to see all of us united in confessing Jesus Christ to the world we live in.
Throughout the week, we have listened to papers, sermons, and sung the great hymns of the church that emphasize the theme of the convention, which is “Christ is Risen!” (1 Corinthians 15)
A highlight for me personally was participating in the opening Divine Service of the convention this past Saturday.
This coming Sunday, the children who attended Higher Things will tell you about their experiences in St. Louis this past month, and if there is time, I will also answer any questions you have regarding the convention.
Can’t wait to see you all on Sunday!
In Christ,
Pastor Rogness
