Fourth Sunday of Easter
The Pope
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus,
Alleluia! Christ is risen!
As the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church meet (at the time of this being written) to select a new Pope, I thought it would be good to share some thoughts on the office of the Pope.
First, Martin Luther saw the Pope as the antichrist. Why? because the office of the Pope was not established by God. The Office often places itself above Holy Scripture. Further, the office has been corrupted throughout time as a force that hinders the Gospel, as the Pope executes his office as a supreme authority of the Church.
And yet, many people worldwide still see the Pope as the supreme authority of the Church on earth. Leaders want his advice, the media spreads his message, and Christians debate his words.
For this reason, while we do not believe in his authority or office, we should desire a strong Pope to be elected who will hold God’s Word supreme.
While I know talking about the Pope can be uncomfortable for us, I’d encourage you to listen to this podcast about the office of the Pope. Pastor Weedon wonderfully lays out the Lutheran view of the Pope in light of our Lutheran Confessions.
God’s peace be with you,
Pastor Rogness
